Of all the items I see larger people pay too much for, reaching tools top the list. It usually happens when folks are recovering from an injury or surgery and turn to a high priced medical supply store for a reacher. To make matters worse, many times they’re not even sold exactly the tools they need. With what you’ll learn here, that doesn’t need to happen.
Reaching tools come in two main designs. First is the “Grip Lock” style shown here. It has replaceable rubber tips that make it well suited for removing jars from a top shelf or even delicate tasks like picking a dime up off the floor. They come in different lengths, in folding models and models where the grip-lock can be rotated.
The second design is the “Vertical Jaw-Grip” reacher. It’s jaw closes like a bird’s beak with the strength you decide 
is necessary and is suited for picking up items like a newspaper, clothing or shoes. Jaw-grip models also come in different lengths and regular or folding models.
Both the “Grip-lock” and “Vertical Jaw-Grip” reachers have pistol style grips making them light and easy to use the first time you pick one up.
When considering reaching tools it’s good to look beyond the traditional. Long handled dressing tools, shoehorns, body washers, back scratchers and even a hands free shoe remover can all make life easier.
